You want to know how to start lettering? Good! You’ve come to the right place. There are so many resources online that can show you how to start brush lettering, calligraphy, etc. BUT they usually require you to get a certain practice sheet or buy a certain book. What are some steps that you can take NOW to START NOW? Well I’ll tell you. Side note: this post assumes you know a bit about what lettering is already. If you don’t check out these blog posts:

STEP 1: This step is easy. 1. Take out your phone (if you don’t already have it out) or get out your computer 2. go to Google and type in “Lettering” or “hand-lettering” and you’ll find a world of beautiful diverse creations to get lost in….well you can get lost later. For now just look and see which creations you like. Which creations are you drawn to?
Discover what you like. This step is important because not only does it get you inspired but it also gives you an idea of all you can create. Use this and get your own ideas churning. Instagram and Pinterest are also other places to go to get inspired. If you want to use some of my work for inspiration you can find me on Instagram HERE and Pinterest HERE (shameless plug over lol)
Quick note: Do not look at these pieces and start comparing. These are just to give you a point of reference. And to get your creative juices flowing. And to find what styles you like and want to try .
Step 3: Pay attention to the actual design. Look at the shapes of the letters for example an uppercase letter “A” has a base triangle shape or how an uppercase O has a circle base shape. Start to train your eye to catch these distinctions.

Step 4: Learn the basics. Start learning the terminology associated with lettering so that way when you start exposing yourself to different material you can understand what is being taught. This is one that I honestly still struggle with because I love to just be free and do me. But it’s important to learn the foundation and the rules behind lettering because when you know what they are you know which ones you want to bend to your will LOL.

Step 5: This could be one of the most important ones. You have to get creative. Just remember to have fun. Have an idea that you like? Do it. Have an crazy color you want to use? Add it. Don’t be afraid to put your own creative spin on things.
