Example of what you can create with lettering

You may be wondering what is lettering? Or maybe you’ve seen and appreciated beautiful artistic word art on social media and wondered “what is this?” Well wonder no more. I’m going to tell you.

Lettering in its simplest definition is the drawing of letters. Really, it’s that simple. It’s you taking the basic form of letters and adding your own creative twist to it. The elements you add to your lettering, whether it be specific colors shapes, textures, etc. can tell a different story. For example, the lettered sign that you may find in a coffee shop may be drastically different to the lettering used to create a logo for a boutique. Lettering is NOT your handwriting. Lots of people often think that because they don’t have good handwriting they can’t learn lettering, but YOU CAN. Since lettering involves drawing letters it involves elements other than handwriting. These elements include illustrations, patterns, colors, textures and many, many other elements. The letter-forms created from lettering are not fonts that you can just find on your computer; they are carefully crafted and thought out to convey specific messages. That’s not to say they couldn’t become fonts, because there are ways that you could digitize your lettering and create different fonts. But there is a distinct difference between a type designer whose goal is to create fonts and a piece of lettering being turned into a font. We will explore this more in a later post.

The beautiful thing about the letter-forms created with lettering is that they are imperfect, beautiful and unique. Lettering is a great form of expression because by using certain elements you can create a piece that conveys a specific message or specific feelings. You decide the tone and feelings behind your lettering. It’s also a great way to relieve stress and incorporate more creativity in your day.
